View RecordsA DUI arrest in Los Angeles County can create records in separate systems. The arresting agency, custody system, and Superior Court do not serve the same function.
If LASD custody is involved, Sheriff’s Department inmate information can provide booking and arrest-related custody details. Criminal case information is handled by the Los Angeles Superior Court, which allows public case searches by case number and offers a defendant-name route when the case number is unknown. Copies of a police or arrest report must be requested from the law-enforcement agency that maintains that report, subject to its access rules.
Following the event from arrest to disposition shows why one website cannot replace every custodian.
Use the stage you are trying to verify to choose the custodian.
| Stage / record | Likely custodian | What it can answer | Useful identifier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booking / custody | Los Angeles County Sheriff when LASD custody is involved | Booking/custody status and arrest-related custody details made available by LASD | Full name; booking or arrest details when known |
| Police / arrest report | The arresting or investigating law-enforcement agency | The agency report for the incident/arrest, subject to that agency’s access rules | Report/incident number, date, location, involved name |
| Criminal court case | Los Angeles Superior Court | Filed criminal case information, court dates and disposition | Case number; defendant name when case number is unknown |
| Final case result | Los Angeles Superior Court case record | How the filed criminal case ended | Case number or defendant search route |
Start with the best identifier you have rather than repeating the same name across unrelated systems.
Use LASD inmate/booking information when LASD custody is relevant; it does not replace the court disposition.
Use Los Angeles Superior Court. If the case number is unknown, use the available defendant-name route.
Each Criminal Defendant Index name search carries a public-access fee; it is not a free substitute for a known case number. The court also lists a $15 charge for indexing requests taking more than 10 minutes. Review the name-search charge before submitting.
For an official disposition or certified court copy, contact the appropriate criminal office at the courthouse handling the case with the case number and document requested. Ask it to confirm availability, copy/certification fees and delivery instructions; index access does not buy a certified record.
A sheriff, police department or other arresting/investigating agency controls its own report-access process.
For an LASD-held report only, call (562) 345-4441 to request it and schedule pickup; LASD checks legal authority to receive it. Have your name, birth date, identification details, incident date/location and report number ready. Drop-off requests are not accepted. Mail requests go to Records and Identification Bureau, Attn: Records Inquiry Non-Law Enforcement Section, 12440 East Imperial Highway, Suite 400 West, Norwalk, CA 90650, with required fees/documents, name, birth date, return address, signature and valid notarized identification.
LASD’s linked schedule limits crime-report release to eligible recipients and says crime reports are not released to suspects or their representatives; collision reports have separate legal eligibility. An eligible report request with a file/booking number costs $25 when a record is found or was purged; without that number, the search fee is $35 and can return no reportable record, a purged record or another agency’s jurisdiction. Additional records/copies can cost extra. These LASD rules and fees do not apply to LAPD, CHP or other agencies.
An arrest is an event; booking is a custody record; the agency report documents the law-enforcement incident; the court case tracks charges and judicial action. A user researching a DUI arrest often needs at least the court case to understand the disposition.
